Why we need to stop putting young people* on boards** (13 November 2025)

£0.00

Thursday 13 November, 1pm, Online

A free, online, 45-minute talk about why we need to stop putting young people (*by which I mainly mean teenagers, especially those under 18, not 20-30 year olds, though some of the thinking might be relevant to them too) on boards.

I will draw on 20 years of experience of co-creating projects with young people and my experience as a charity CEO to share the essential conditions for human self-determination and how hard it is to find them in traditional board meetings (especially if you're young). And how, without those conditions, young people on boards tend to get shut down, side-lined and even exploited.

I’ll also share some ideas about what we can do to design boards and board meetings so that that young people have the conditions they need to really express themselves and contribute to decision-making (** because ultimately I think we can and should put young people on boards, but only if we do it right).

This is an informal sharing of a presentation I gave to relationship managers and others at the Arts Council in October 2025. I don’t pretend to have all the answers, but am excited to be part of the conversation and learn from everyone attending.

Please sign up by clicking ‘add to cart’ and I will send you a Zoom link on the morning of the talk.

Please note when you book you will be taken to a payment page. You do not need to put in your payment details, just click continue and your place will be registered.
